Can I have your Social Security number?
During class, we were discussing the idea that we may not have as much privacy as we think we do. Many said that we still have some form of privacy, while others argued that there is a lot we do not know and our privacy could be a myth. I came across this video on youtube and I was surprised to hear in the first couple of minutes that we have no form of privacy. From security cameras watching us perform our daily tasks. Algorithms memorizing things we search up and later make recommendations for us. We often permit companies to watch and we aren’t aware of it. For instance, if you have an iPhone then you probably are aware of that long-term of agreements, privacy warnings, and legal writing right before you program your phone. If you’ve ever actually read it which I guarantee you haven’t. You may notice that it ask for permission to store and use your information for research. From your voice when using Siri, facial recognition to better improve it, and much more. TikTok’s algorithm uses videos you like and recommends videos that some might say are spot on with individuals’ interests. If you’ve ever googled something multiple times, you may notice that ads for that specific item or service might start showing up everywhere. So I wonder have we gone past having privacy and are we okay with it? Personally as bad as it sounds I do not care to a certain extent. I do not mind if I get recommended stuff I like or things being recommended to me. However, my personal information being accessible to anyone is my issue. Will we reach a point where our social security number won’t be a secret anymore. Will it be like giving someone your number?
