What is Technology?

I decided that it would be fitting as an introduction to this course to ask questions about what is technology? Who cares? Why should anyone care how “technology” is defined? After reading what Heidegger and Dusek had to say about the subject, I think I had a firm enough grasp of it. One of the many things I found interesting were the three definitions of technology which include technology shown as hardware, technology as rules, and technology as a system (Dusek, 31-32). I believe that each makes a valid point as to what is technology but not on their own. For starters, the hardware is used to describe “tools” that help us achieve something. Dusek makes the argument that this method as technology can also fall under technology as rules (Dusek, 32). I personally think that technology as a system is the most fitting definition for technology since it not only talks about the hardware being used but how it is being used by people (Dusek, 32-33). However, Heidegger’s The Question Concerning Technology makes me realize that it is much more complicated it is to really understand what technology is. We should care about what technology is because we cannot escape it. It is apart of our lives and we must learn how exactly we use it or how we should use it appropriately.
